If humans build colonies on Mars, they will need to be able to eat, and Earth is too far to regularly bring supplies of fresh food. That means creating greenhouses that can withstand the Martian climate and provide enough food, while also sustaining life support systems. Through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ag.arizona.edu\/lunargreenhouse\/\">Prototype Lunar\/Mars Greenhouse<\/a> project, NASA scientists and\u00a0a university team are collaborating to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/lunar-martian-greenhouses-designed-to-mimic-those-on-earth\">develop long-term methods that could help sustain pioneers working in deep space<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">At the University of Arizona&#8217;s Controlled Environment Agriculture Center, an 18 foot long, 7 foot, 3 inch diameter lunar greenhouse chamber is equipped as an inflatable, deployable greenhouse prototype with a bioregenerative life support system. Bioregenerative means supporting\u00a0plant and crop production for nutrition, air revitalization, and water recycling and waste recycling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">You can see what life on Mars is like at <a href=\"https:\/\/spacecenter.org\/exhibits-and-experiences\/mission-mars\/\">Space Center Houston&#8217;s Mission Mars exhibit<\/a>. At home, you can build your own version of a greenhouse and learn how they help plants grow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Materials:<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">2 plastic cups, such as party cups, one clear (for top), one any color or clear (for bottom)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Push pin<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Soil<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Fast germination seed (green beans take about 7-10 days, for example) or seedling plant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Spoon<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Squirt water bottle<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Thermometer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>Instructions to build the greenhouse:<img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-67755 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/spacecenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Untitled-design-10-600x503-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacecenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Untitled-design-10-600x503-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/spacecenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Untitled-design-10-600x503-1-300x252.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Take the bottom plastic party cup, and use the\u00a0push pin to poke 4 small holes in a square on the bottom of the cup.<br \/>\nIdeas: Recycle used plastic cups. Decorate and personalize your cup planter!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Fill bottom cup 3\/4 full with soil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Add plant or seeds. Use about 3-4 seeds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Add another layer of soil on top.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Pat gently with the back of a spoon<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Using the squirt bottle, add small amount of water to dampen soil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Place the top clear plastic cup securely inside the bottom cup. If the cups are the same size, use packing tape to secure the edge, only covering half so you can still access the interior.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Place in a sunny window or spot. Make sure to put something under the planter to catch any water that drains.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Note: Water every couple of days&#8211;use fingers to test soil moisture. If soil sticks, it&#8217;s moist enough. This is your baseline.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Form a hypothesis&#8211;an educated guess&#8211;about how the greenhouse will affect the soil and environment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">30 minutes after building the greenhouse: <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">How did the environment inside the greenhouse change? Observe how it looks&#8211;how is it different from when you first finished the greenhouse? Take a photo of the greenhouse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Use the thermometer to find the soil temperature. Watch the seed or seedling growth. Is it growing at the same or a different than anticipated rate due to living in the greenhouse?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Plant the same seed or seedling in a plastic cup without a top cup. Compare it to the plant in the greenhouse you made.
